Schools & Education & Language courses
As a family raising children in another country, one of the main topics parents have questions about is about is education. How does the local school system work? Is international education available? Which schools are best for my child? The Expat Family Market features multiple International Schools, a Dutch education expert for international families, language classes for adults & children, as well as offer additional information about the Dutch school system on our sister-site Amsterdam Families.
Are you looking for an international school in the Amsterdam region?
We would be delighted to welcome you and your children to the Amity community. We understand that choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions you will make. Our Admissions Team is here to support you in this process by listening to what matters to you.
Amity International School Amsterdam serves students between the ages of 3 and 15 and is an IB World School for the Primary Years Programme and a candidate school* for the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme. It is our goal to equip students with the skills necessary to confronting the problems of today and those of the future.

Winford Bilingual provides fully immersive, dual-language primary education in 3 locations: Amsterdam, Haarlem and Leiden!
Our small classrooms provide two certified teachers in both languages for ages 4-12. Our unique curriculum combines the Dutch and UK curricula with the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and Montessori ideals. All subjects are taught in both languages throughout the entire school day. We provide for this by having fully certified native speaking teachers for both languages. This helps children develop their communication and comprehension abilities in both Dutch and English.
Children are given the opportunity to be continuously exposed to both languages throughout the school day in an organic and genuine way. Therefore speaking, listening and learning in another language feels comfortable and natural.
At Winford Bilingual, we want our classrooms to be a reflection of the global environment that exists within the Randstad community. We believe that children learn best when they are given opportunities for success through interaction with their peers and the adults around them.
We strive to promote a sense of community through mixed age groups in each classroom, where children work, play and eat meals together. We serve both international and Dutch students to make our school not only bilingual in language but culturally immersive.
Many children start daycare in the Netherlands as early as at 10-12 weeks old until they turn 4. From that age on, children are usually attending primary school and many children attend after-school care, called BSO (Buitenschoolse opvang). You will find many childcare options to choose from in The Netherlands, from larger chains with many many locations to smaller daycare and out-of-school facilities. But with so many options, it may feel overwhelming to choose.
At Robinson Childcare, we understand that finding the right daycare or after-school care facility for your child is a very personal decision & must leave the parents without any worries while their children are in the care of others. We pride ourselves on open communication and a welcoming culture where kids truly feel like they have a ‘home away from home’. We happily welcome international families and our staff is dedicated to helping you and your family feel at home in The Netherlands.
Robinson Childcare is a professional mid-sized organization with 11 locations in and around Amsterdam, Amstelveen and Haarlem. We offer affordable, accessible and quality childcare and after school care for kids in the age of 0-12 years old.
We strongly believe that children develop at their own pace and indicate themselves when they are ready for a new challenge. We therefore strive to stimulate every child individually in their further development, both mentally and physically. We go outside as often as possible, also during those typical Dutch rainy days. Each and every location has a challenging playground where kids can enjoy themselves together with their friends. When children are at one of our Robinson Childcare facilities, we truly see it as a chance to make every day an adventure!
Hoi! Hola! γεια! أهلا!
Taalhuis Amsterdam is a house for languages, located in the heart of Amsterdam, where you and your children can learn and improve your Dutch and Mediterranean languages. We are a team of language lovers and we have a thrill for text, literature, grammar and culture (and coffee).
We offer group courses, private lessons and tailored in-company workshops, but also various text and interpreting services. We believe that learning a language is more than focussing on books, vocabulary and grammar and that many factors contribute to this process. We therefore teach in small groups, with as little level difference as possible and we do our best to create a safe and ‘gezellige’ atmosphere – also by playing games. In our classes, which are mostly taught in the target language, we spend most of the time on training speaking skills.
We also organize events, like language exchanges, museum trips, film nights and walks in the Dutch countryside. And during our trips abroad you can bring your new language skills into practice – this October we’re in Sicily, and next month we’ll head to Athens.
For children, we offer playful lessons in various age groups. Our teachers open the doors to a new language and culture, and help them to learn new vocabulary and get familiar with pronunciation through interactive activities.
Optimist International School
We are a public international primary school offering a happy, safe and encouraging learning environment where everyone feels welcome and valued. Surrounded by nature, our location in Hoofddorp is a small 15 minutes from Schiphol Airport and the city of Haarlem, and only 20 minutes from the centre of Amsterdam.
We make learning visible by providing inquiry-based education and giving children the opportunity to discover and develop their unique talents and learning skills. We embrace each child’s continuous learning journey; ‘Bringing out your child’s inner magic’.
Our language of instruction is English, and our core programme is based on the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). Learning guidance is taken from the British National Curriculum (NC) for language and mathematics. We also have specialist teachers for additional support in English and Dutch as an additional language and offer sport, art, music and dance based extra-curricular activities.
Language Friendly School
OIS recently became a Language Friendly school. This means that all languages spoken by students are welcome and valued. In our classes we allow students to use the languages they feel most comfortable with in order to show their understanding and develop their skills, while we try to methodically use their languages to support the development in English, as well.
Curious about our school?
We have availability in all groups for children aged 4 - 11 years. New children are welcomed throughout the academic year.
